Congressional Allies of Abortion Industry Attempt to Deflect Attention from Dangers to Women at Unsafe Clinics

New Legislation Threatens First Amendment Rights of Pregnancy Centers

LANSDOWNE, VA - Recent headlines have included Kermit Gosnell's convictions and multiple allegations of regulatory violations, patient endangerment and misconduct against other abortion sellers. Roland Warren, President and CEO of Care Net, today responded to recently introduced legislation, HR 2030, that targets pregnancy centers for federal regulation based solely on their life-affirming perspective.

Warren noted:
"Instead of cleaning up their own house, abortion advocates in Congress are attempting to deflect attention from the unsafe and unsanitary conditions women are subjected to at many abortion clinics. The fact is that pregnancy centers provide a safe and caring environment where women and men receive the support they need to make positive life decisions. In addition, these private, not-for-profit pregnancy center's viewpoints are not subject to Congressional regulation. We will vigorously advocate for the First Amendment rights of pregnancy centers to serve women and men without interference from the federal government."

"Care Net's network of over 1150 affiliated pregnancy centers are absolutely committed to truthful and accurate advertising. Our centers treat women and men with respect and provide resources which empower life-affirming choices. This legislation would impair the ability of pregnancy centers to serve their communities," Warren added.

Warren noted that similar legislation introduced in previous congresses had failed. Further, courts have repeatedly found that local ordinances designed to similarly regulate pregnancy centers violate the First Amendment. The Alliance Defending Freedom has submitted legal analysis of H.R 2030 to Congress.
